Need or Scam??

As I was running errands today, I saw a foreign family by the side of the road in Hilliard.  The Dad was holding a sign and asking for money, and the Mother and 2 small children were sitting beside him in the shade (on this HOT day).  Things like that always tug at my heart-strings (especially when there are small children involved).  A million question go through my mind (1) how did they end up there? (2) is it just a scam? (3) is there no government agency that can help them? (4) it’s a warm day, do they even have enough money for a cold drink? (5) will it be safe for me to pull over and give them some money? ……..

The scriptures are full of commands for us to help the poor:

1 John 3:17-18 “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”

Proverbs 14:31“He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”

(there are many, many more scriptures)

I never know what to do!  Sometimes I’ve helped, and other times I haven’t.   I know that you can’t help everybody, and in today’s society you have to be extra smart and stay safe.  But I also think of the parable of the Good Samaritan.  How easy is it to just cross the street and look the other way?   What would Jesus do if He were here?  Are we His hands and feet?

I’ve found the best way for me to handle it is to say a prayer and ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance.  Asking, does God want me to help and if so how, and then to be obedient.

It’s Your Choice!

Have you ever been sitting in a church service and the message just grips your heart?  Yesterday was a time like that for me.  Our church was honored to have Pastor Jim Custer speak and his message is one I won’t soon forget!

His message was on the “Future Life”.  It’s something that’s fascinating, but not something that we often think about.  Mostly our lives are centered around the here and now.  But the here and now is not all that there is to life.   There is life after we die!

There are some things in this life that we can’t decide; like when we’re born, what our physical features are like, or when we die (I know, that one is arguable – but you get my point), but there is one very important decision that we can decide on, and that is where we will spend our forever.   You see, all of us will live forever.   The awesome news is that you can choose where you spend it; (1) in a place of blessing with our Creator, or (2) in a place of forever torment!    It’s your choice!

John 3:16 “”For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

God won’t force Himself to be in your life now, but then don’t expect to be in His life later, in all eternity.   Make the right choice today!  Invite Jesus Christ into your life – now is the time!  It’s a choice that will affect your life forever, and ever, and ever,…….
